westcoastcalligraphy.comRoedde House Museum
Roedde House Museum, nestled in Vancouver's West End, gives you a look into the life of an upper-middle-class family during Vancouver's early days. Gustave and Matilda Roedde were German immigrants who settled in the city in the late 19th century. The house, an exemplar of Queen Anne revival architecture, was designed by the esteemed Francis Rattenbury. Notably, Gustav Roedde opened Vancouver's first bookbindery in 1888, leaving an indelible mark on the city's literary and entrepreneurial landscape. Born in Germany in 1860, he took his expertise from Leipzig's bookbinding tradition to new lands. His career flourished parallel to Vancouver's growth, and by 1893, his success was encapsulated in the house at 1415 Barclay Street. Beyond its architectural allure, the museum offers a window into Gustav’s impactful legacy in bookbinding and into the day-to-day family life of the era, capturing a pivotal period in Vancouver's narrative.
