The Word Bookstore: 50 years of community, one secondhand book at a time
The popular independent, secondhand book shop has become a cultural institution in Montreal. The store's manager, Brendan King-Edwards, joins us to share how the store his parents built has been key to building community: one in the McGill Ghetto where students, academics, poets and especially curious minds come and spend more time than money (cash only). No longer a teenager wrapping books with his twin brother listening to '90s hip hop mixtapes, Brendan also reflects on how the family-business identity continues to push back against the consumer culture that shrinks community to one that stops at a pile of packages at one's doorstep.
Nantali Ingongo of CBC’s The Bridge has interviewed Brendan King-Edwards and told the story of The Word Bookstore, Montreal, just in time for their 50th anniversary. We believe our readers would enjoy this one.
For those finding themselves in Montreal this April, details about their anniversary party can be found here.
