The Toronto award ceremony for the Alcuin Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada will be held on October 3, 2016. The event will include a keynote talk by designer Michael Solomon, the presentation of the awards, and an excellent sit-down dinner. The event will open at 5:30 pm for a chance to view the award-winning books, and dinner will follow at 6:30 pm.
The Awards will be hosted at the Arts and Letters Club at 14 Elm Street in Toronto. The Club has an illustrious history that counts The Group of Seven and Robertson Davies among its members, and its incredible building is a National Historic Site. Attendance at the Awards is a fantastic opportunity to see its beautiful interiors.
The keynote speaker will be Michael Solomon, winner of this year’s first prize in the children’s books category for the design of A Year Without Mom (Groundwood Books). Michael is the Art Director at Groundwood Books and has worked with the company since its founding. He has designed numerous books for Groundwood, Firefly, Macmillan and Nelson over his career. In 2000 he was the ninth recipient of the Claude Aubry Award for distinguished service within the field of children’s literature. He was the first designer to receive this distinction.
