Jan and Crispin Elsted of Barbarian Press talk at the Alcuin AGM, June 8, 2015

As usually, the Alcuin Society will transform its Annual General Meeting into an event not to be missed by publishing connoisseurs and letterpress lovers. Our special guests this year are Jan and Crispin Elsted from the Barbarian Press, whose lifetime achievements are recognized with the Robert R. Reid Award and Medal. Jan will talk first, offering an overview of their recent work and collaborations, including Pericles, Founts & Circumstance and the new The Ingoldsby Legends: a Gallimaufry, illustrated with pictures, followed by Crispin’s presentation.

The activity of the Barbarian Press spreads over several decades, their journey starting in Kent, England in 1977. A year later the Elsteds undertook the heroic challenge of moving their hand presses and type cases to Mission, British Columbia. Since then, they have produced many unique tomes, which include poetry, prose, bibliography, and particularly books on wood engraving. Endgrain: Contemporary Wood Engraving in North America published in 1995 was such a success that it generated a whole series of Endgrain Editions, each book showcasing the work of an engraver, printed from the original blocks.

The event takes place on Monday, June 8, 2015, at the UBC Golf Club, on 5185 University Boulevard in Vancouver. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the AGM starts at 7:00, followed by Jan’s and Crispin’s presentations at 7:30. There will be a cash bar, and coffee, tea and cookies are offered. The admission is free of charge, but seating is limited, so please reserve your seat either by email at membership[at]alcuinsociety[dot]com or Eventbrite - 2015 Alcuin Society Annual General Meeting
